Founded in 1968, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside emerged from a bold commitment to the Wisconsin Idea—the principle that the university’s impact should extend to every corner of the state. University of Wisconsin Parkside diploma, Get a UW-Parkside degree certificate online.
For decades, residents in Kenosha and Racine had sought a four-year university in their communities; finally, in 1965, the Wisconsin Legislature merged the two-year centers in these cities and created what would become UW-Parkside.
The site for the new campus was chosen with deliberate intention: a 700-acre parcel of natural Wisconsin prairie and woodland, carefully selected to sit equidistant between the Kenosha and Racine city centers, signaling the institution’s commitment to equally serve both communities.
Founding Chancellor Irvin G. Wyllie thoughtfully named the campus “Parkside” to honor its idyllic setting and to represent service to all of southeastern Wisconsin. How to order a University of Wisconsin Parkside degree online? Today, that commitment is sustained by enrollment numbers: 31.6 percent of the student body comes from Kenosha County and 26.1 percent from Racine County.
The preeminent aim of UW-Parkside’s 2025 Strategic Framework was to increase the number of graduates annually by 50 percent. This goal reflects a recognition that Kenosha and Racine—distinctive within Wisconsin for their diverse nonwhite populations, lower bachelor’s degree attainment rates, and higher poverty levels—require a university that actively works to serve those historically underserved by higher education.
The university’s mission is explicit: to be “responsive to its diverse student population, and its local, national and global communities”.
What distinguishes UW-Parkside from many larger institutions is its intimate approach to education. With a 17:1 student-faculty ratio and 100 percent of classes taught by professors (not teaching assistants), students are known by name and mentored by faculty dedicated to their success. The university offers over 50 undergraduate majors, 87 minors and certificates, and 16 graduate degrees across four academic colleges: Arts and Humanities; Business, Economics, and Computing; Natural and Health Sciences; and Social Sciences and Professional Studies.
The Department of Business programs hold accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International)—a distinction achieved by fewer than 5 percent of business schools worldwide. The chemistry program is approved by the American Chemical Society, the health information management program is accredited by CAHIIM, and the molecular biology and bioinformatics program holds accreditation from ASBMB.
