Robert Morris University (RMU) was founded in 1921 as the Pittsburgh School of Accountancy, established by Sarah Lubnow in response to a critical shortage of accountants in the local economy. The story of RMU is a story of deliberate, strategic growth. In 1962, the school purchased a 230‑acre property in Moon Township, moving its campus from downtown Pittsburgh to the suburbs and transforming from a commuter college into a residential university. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania granted the school authority to award associate degrees, and the institution was renamed Robert Morris Junior College. The main campus moved to Moon Township during the 1964‑65 academic year, and over the following decades, the institution steadily expanded its academic offerings.
In 1969, the school was renamed Robert Morris College. In 2002, reflecting its expanded mission and graduate programs, the institution became Robert Morris University. Under the leadership of President Gregory G. Dell‘Omo, who was installed in 2005, RMU has continued to invest in academic programs, campus facilities, and student support services.
