The story of SFU begins with an act of provincial ambition. In 1962, the British Columbia government, recognising the need for a second university in the rapidly growing Lower Mainland, appointed a commission to recommend a site for a new institution.

The commission selected Burnaby Mountain, a 1,400-foot peak overlooking the region, over the objections of those who favoured a more accessible location. The choice was deliberate: the mountain location would symbolise the university’s aspiration to rise above the ordinary.

The university was named for Simon Fraser, the explorer and fur trader who charted much of British Columbia. I want to buy SFU degree online. The architect Arthur Erickson, whose design for SFU is considered a masterpiece of modernist architecture, integrated the campus buildings into the mountain’s natural contours, creating a unified, walkable campus that seems to grow from the landscape itself.

SFU opened its doors in 1965 with 2,500 students and 154 faculty members. From its earliest days, the university embraced a distinctive mission: to be “the engaged university,” a place where scholarship would be connected to the community, where students would learn by doing, and where the boundaries between disciplines would be crossed and recrossed.
